Okinawa Islands

Japanese: 沖縄諸島 - おきなわしょとう
Okinawa Islands

The central islands of Okinawa Prefecture. They are the largest of the Ryukyu Islands. The term refers to the islands scattered across a vast area of ocean, including the main island of Okinawa, the surrounding Iheya and Izena Islands, the Kerama Islands, the Yokatsu Islands, the Daito Islands, an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean 350 km east of the main island of Okinawa, and the Kume Island and Aguni Island. Before Okinawa was returned to Japan in 1972, they were also called the Okinawa Archipelago. They can also be said to be the islands that exclude the Sakishima Islands (Miyako Islands and Yaeyama Islands) from the Ryukyu Islands that make up Okinawa Prefecture. They are the center of Okinawa Prefecture society, with about 90% of the prefecture's population concentrated in these islands. Transportation between the islands is provided by sea routes centered on Naha Port, as well as air routes from Naha Airport to Kumejima, Agunijima, Kitadaitojima, and Minamidaitojima.
