[Topography, Climate]
A large mountain range that lies in a crescent-shaped arc from east to west across the southwestern part of the European continent. The Alps are called Alpes in French, Alpen in German, and Alpi in Italian. They extend for about 1,200 km and are 130 to 200 km wide. If the mountain range is divided into eastern and western parts by the St. Gotthard Pass, the Eastern Alps branch out into more mountain ranges than the Western Alps, and are wider but lower in altitude. The total area is about 180,000 km2, of which 40% belongs to the Western Alps and 60% to the Eastern Alps. …
