King of Thailand (reigned 1868-1910). Rama V. Known as a great ruler who implemented various reforms to modernize Thailand (then Siam) as a nation while the colonial powers extended their influence throughout Asia, he maintained his independence. He built the foundations for modern national systems such as finance, law, national education, conscription, postal and telegraph services, and modern medicine, and organized a cabinet with the king's younger brother as its central minister, inaugurating a modern government. He also established local administrative organizations and created a centralized national governing structure. The series of reforms implemented by the king to modernize the nation are known as the Chakri Reforms. Thailand's oldest and largest comprehensive university (founded in 1917) is named after the king. → Vajirawut
