Japanese: 音響音声学 - おんきょうおんせいがく（英語表記）acoustic phonetics

A field that studies the physical and acoustic aspects of speech sounds. The transmission of speech sounds can be broadly divided into three parts: articulation, the resulting speech waves, and perception. The fields that study each of these are called articulatory phonetics, acoustic phonetics, and auditory phonetics. It can also be divided into two parts: articulatory and other, with acoustic phonetics sometimes including the auditory part. Acoustic research lagged behind physiological research on articulation because it relied on mechanical experimental facilities, but after World War II, the speech spectrograph was developed, and in combination with computers, research on formants progressed rapidly. Furthermore, research on perception is being carried out by freely synthesizing and creating artificial languages and using them.

言語音の物理的・音響的研究をする分野。言語音の伝達は，調音，それから出る音声波，そしてそれの知覚の3つに大きく分けられ，それぞれを研究する分野を調音音声学，音響音声学，聴覚音声学という。また，調音面とその他の2つに分け，音響音声学に聴覚面を含むこともある。音響の研究は，器械実験設備に依存するために調音の生理学的研究に比して遅れていたが，第2次世界大戦後音声スペクトログラフが開発され，コンピュータと結びついてフォルマントの研究を中心に急速に進展した。さらに自由に人工的に言語を合成してつくりだし，それを用いることにより知覚の研究が進められている。
