Gros, Antoine-Jean, Baron
Born: March 16, 1771, Paris
[Died] June 26, 1835. French painter in Paris. He studied under Jacques-Louis David from 1786 to 1793. He stayed in Italy for seven years from 1793. During this time, he became close to Napoleon I through Josephine, and worked as a war painter, producing works such as "Napoleon at the Pont d'Arcole" (1796, National Museum of Fine Arts, Palace of Versailles). He returned to Paris in 1801, and exhibited works such as "Napoleon Visiting the Plague Victims at Jaffa" (1804, Louvre), "The Battle of Abukir" (1806, National Museum of Fine Arts, Palace of Versailles), and "Napoleon at the Battle of Eylau" (1808, Louvre. → Battle of Eylau) at the Salon. He also painted the decorative paintings on the dome of the Panthéon in Paris from 1811, and was awarded the title of baron in 1824. After 1815, he took over David's studio and taught his pupils, abandoning his romantic style in favour of classicism. In 1835, he painted "Hercules and Diomedes", but it was poorly received, and in despair he threw himself into the Seine near Meudon.
