Wilkie, Sir David
Born November 18, 1785, Cults, Fife, Scotland
[Died] June 1, 1841. English genre painter, portrait painter, and printmaker. He studied at the Royal Academy in London. In the beginning, he was influenced by D. Teniers and Ostade and painted the lives of ordinary people of his time, and his anecdotal genre paintings were loved by many. From 1825 to 1828, he traveled to Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain, and in Spain, he was influenced by Velázquez and Murillo, which led to a significant change in his style of painting. In 1830, he became painter to the royal household, and in 1836, he was knighted. In 1840, he visited the Holy Land to find the true background of religious paintings, and died on the way back to Gibraltar. Turner's "Peace" depicts his burial at sea. His major works include "A Village Festival" (1804), "The Village Politician" (06), and "The Blind Fiddler" (12).

Willkie, Wendell Lewis

[Died] October 8, 1944, New York. American businessman and politician. He followed in his father's footsteps as a lawyer, but in 1929 he joined the Commonwealth and Southern Power Company, where he was in charge of legal affairs, and four years later became its president. Originally a Democrat, he fought against the federal government in opposition to the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, a New Deal policy, and in 1940, he was suddenly nominated as the Republican presidential candidate for the year after writing an article titled "We the People" in Fortune magazine. He fought well, although he lost to F. Roosevelt. During World War II, he was an early proponent of aiding the Allied Powers, and was active in visiting Britain, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, China, and other countries. In his book One World (1943), he advocated international cooperation after the war.

アメリカの実業家,政治家。父の跡を継いで弁護士となったが,1929年コモンウェルス・アンド・サザン電力会社に入社し法律面を担当,4年後その社長となった。元来民主党員であったが,ニューディール政策のテネシー川流域開発公社TVA法に反対して連邦政府と争い,40年『フォーチュン』誌に寄稿した「我ら人民」の一文で,突如その年の共和党大統領候補に指名された。 F.ルーズベルトに敗れはしたが善戦。第2次世界大戦に際しては早くから連合国援助を主張し,イギリス,中東,ソ連,中国などを歴訪しながら活躍した。著書『一つの世界』 One World (1943) では,戦後の国際協力を唱えた。
