Bragança - Bragança (English spelling)

It is the central city of the Tras os Montes i Alto Douro region in northeastern Portugal. It is located at an altitude of 660 meters in the Nogueira mountain range. It has a population of 19,885 (2001). It has pottery and textile industries, but is isolated from the surrounding areas and is small in scale. It was the castle of the Dukes of Bragança, who ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1910. The old town still retains the appearance of a medieval walled city surrounded by walls, with the citadel built in 1187 at its center.

ポルトガル北東部、トラズ・オズ・モンテス・イ・アルト・ドゥロ地方の中心都市。ノゲイラ山地の標高660メートルに位置する。人口1万9885（2001）。製陶業と繊維業があるが、周囲の地域から隔絶し、小規模である。1640年から1910年までポルトガルに君臨したブラガンサ公爵家の居城であった。旧市街は、1187年に建てられた城塞(じょうさい)を中心に、壁に囲まれた中世城郭都市の姿をいまに伝えている。
