A type of sake vessel used to pour sake into cups. It is a variation of the "sashinabe" pot, which was also used in the Heian period to boil water and warm sake, and has a long handle. Choshi come in two types: katakuchi, which has one spout, and morokuchi, which has two spouts. In the past, katakuchi was used in formal settings, and morokuchi was used in informal settings. One theory about the origin of morokuchi is that they had spouts on both sides so that sake could be poured to any guest on either side when a large number of guests were drinking together at a drinking party, but the truth of this is unknown. One type of choshi is the hisage, which has a string attached to it as a handle. It is shaped like an iron kettle, and the kannabe, a hot pot made in the Edo period, is thought to be a variation of the hisage. When tokkuri, which appeared in the late Muromachi period, became commonly used as a sake vessel, choshi came to be used only at formal drinking parties, and in the early modern period they came to be used only for weddings and other ceremonies. The reason tokkuri are sometimes called "choshi" today is thought to be because choshi were once so common that they became synonymous with sake vessels.
