〘Noun〙① Paper used to wrap a document (monjo) . A general term for wrapping paper used to enclose the main document, sealing paper, etc. Sometimes also called rai-shi (gift paper) . ※Gonki - August 20, 1000, Choho 2nd year (1000), "Jibo Sojo presented one lining paper and two hanging papers" ② Paper used to wrap gifts. Often paper with shapes such as noshi (gift wrapping) or mizuhiki (paper string used for water -based paper) printed on it. ③ A piece of paper affixed to a document to augment, delete, or correct the main text. ※Kinryo-ko - Goshu, Volume 3, Volume 23 (Edo) "This red-written hanging paper has been erased" ④ A long, thin piece of advertising paper wrapped around magazines and books like a sash. It also refers to a long, thin piece of paper placed on top of a rolled up paper to prevent it from opening. ※Koshikata no Ki (1961) by Kiyokata Kaburagi of the Suzuki School. "Even for a triptych of high-quality material, it is rolled up nicely and wrapped with a wrapping paper with the name of the store printed on it."

〘名〙① 文書(もんじょ)の上にかけて包む紙。本紙を包む包み紙、封をするための封紙などの総称。時には礼紙(らいし)をもいう。※権記‐長保二年(1000)八月二〇日「実房僧正表奏之、裹紙一枚、懸紙二枚」② 進物の上包に用いる紙。多く熨斗(のし)、水引(みずひき)などの形を印刷した紙。③ 本文の増補、削除、訂正などをするために文書に貼付された紙片。※禁令考‐後集・第三・巻二三(江戸)「此朱書懸紙を以張消」④ 雑誌や本に帯のように巻く広告用の細長い紙。また、紙を巻いて開かないように上にかける細長い紙もいう。※こしかたの記(1961)〈鏑木清方〉鈴木学校「三枚続の上物でも、クルクルと程よく巻いてそこの店の名が刷ってある掛紙を掛け」
