A position on epistemology in medieval philosophy. In contrast to the extreme idealism that asserted the existence of universals, universals were names for genus, species, individual, etc., which were nothing more than aspects of the same thing, and although they had different logical positions, there was no real distinction between them. Proposed by Guillaume de Champeaux and others. (→ Universals debate ) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
