A city in the northeastern part of Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. It occupies the lowlands and plateaus on the right bank of the downstream Tone River. The central city area at the mouth of the river is centered around Choshi Port, and has developed as a fishing town and a key location for water transportation on the Tone River. The Sobu Main Line, Narita Line, and Choshi Electric Railway pass through the city, and Choshi Ohashi Bridge, completed in 1962, spans the Tone River. Choshi Port is one of the leading fishing ports in the country, and it has a large catch of pacific saury and sardines. Seafood processing and food industries such as soy sauce production, which have been traditional since the early modern period, are thriving, and these alone account for approximately 90% (2003) of the total value of manufactured goods shipped. Inubozaki and Byobugaura on the south bank belong to Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park. At the southern end are Naarai Port and Togawa Port, which once flourished as Togawa Senken. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 84.19 km2 . 70,210 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
