...In 1970, the 41km stretch connecting Kanbayashi, Yamanouchi Town and Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture, crossing Shibu Pass, was improved and paved and opened as the Shiga-Kusatsu Road, attracting many tourists throughout the year. In recent years, the area around Mt. Yakebitai (2050m), Mt. Gorin (1620m), and Mt. Ryuo (1900m) in the north has been called Okushiga, while the area around Yamada Onsen in Takayama Village, Kamitakai County in the south has been called Minamishiga, and tourism development has flourished.
