The Remaining Chapter of the Law Book

Japanese: 律書残篇 - りっしょざんぺん

A document that records ancient laws regarding punishment. It is also called the "Remaining Parts of the Ancient Code." It is estimated to have been created between 798 and 812, with additions made after that. It contains penal regulations such as the five punishments and atonement laws, and some unique content, such as the seven cardinal sins, that is not found in the Taiho Code and the Yoro Code. The extant copy is a scroll consisting of 12 leaves with no beginning or end, and the "Daibensho Kochi Sanzo Osho Hyoseishu" is written on the back of the pages, indicating that it was handed down to Todaiji Temple Tonan-in in Nara. It is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.

古代の刑罰に関する法令を記す文献。〈古律書残篇〉ともよばれる。成立は798年から812年の間と推定され，その後も追加がなされたとみられる。内容は五刑の贖法などの刑罰規定で，七逆(しちぎゃく)など一部《大宝律(たいほうりつ)》《養老律(ようろうりつ)》にない特異な内容をも含む。現存する写本は首尾を欠く12葉から成る巻子本で，紙背に〈大弁正広智三蔵和尚表制集(だいべんしょうこうちさんぞうわじょうひょうせいしゅう)〉が書写されており，奈良東大寺東南院(とうなんいん)に伝えられたものであることがわかる。国指定重要文化財。
