Shot peening

Shot peening

A metal surface treatment method in which small particles (shot) of white pig iron (high carbon iron) or steel are struck (peened) against machine parts such as springs using a compressed air stream or a high-speed rotating blade, generating compressive residual stress on the surface of the machine parts and improving their fatigue strength. Similar methods include shot blasting and stress peening. The former aims to clean the surface by spraying (blasting) shot to remove oxides (scale) on the surface of steel and other materials, while the latter is a shot peening method that applies stress similar to that experienced by machine parts during use, which improves fatigue strength even more than simple shot peening. Shot peening was proposed by American FP Zimmerli around 1930, and rapidly spread as a surface treatment method for springs from the 1940s onwards.
