Appointed governor of Croatia at the age of 27, he participated in the battle against the Ottoman Empire. He is known for his epic poem Szigeti veszedelem (The Peril of Sziget) (written 1645-46, published 1651), which is based on his great-grandfather's battle against the Ottoman army, and is considered the father of Hungarian epic literature. He also wrote the prose Az török áfium ellen való orvosság (The Turkish Opium Medicine) (written 60-61, published 1705), which are expressions of his political and strategic ideas.
