…Far from the viewpoint of the courtly chivalric tales based on the free will of the people involved, Thomas of France (1158-80?) attempted to take up this legend from the perspective of a chivalric tale based on the free will of the people involved, to focus on the psychology of the protagonist rather than his actions, and to change the role of the aphrodisiac into a symbolic one. The Oxford manuscript Tristan the Mad (late 12th century?), the Norwegian monk Robert's Saga (1226), and the German Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan (1205-10?) are all descended from Thomas's work and are called the "chivalric lineage." This shocking tale of passion has been passed down to later generations, intertwined with the tales of the Knights of the Round Table, and has inspired many imitations and criticisms. The most influential of these was the music drama by R. Wagner, who sang of the conflict between the normality of the day and the passion of the night, and created a symbolic myth from this subject. …
