...The Iyo white banded fly, Tabanus iyoensis (illustration), is famous for its large outbreaks in the mountainous regions of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and for its preference for attacking humans. In some regions, people even take a break from mountain work during the outbreak of this species, and it is also called ororo or tejiro. Other species that prefer to attack cattle and horses include the gray-black to gray-brown Ushiabu (illustration) and the yellow-gray to black Akaushiabu, which is 2 to 3 cm long. ...
