A German revolutionary woman, she belonged to the left wing of the German Social Democratic Party and played a leading role in the women's movement, leading the organization of the first International Socialist Women's Conference in 1907. She participated in the founding of the German Communist Party, was a member of its executive committee from 1919 onwards, and became head of the Comintern's Women's Department in 1924.
