Originally, the term referred to squatters on government land in the colony of New South Wales in Australia. Poor ex-convicts and others raised stolen livestock on these squatter lands. However, when 19 counties were established in the colony in 1829 and settlement outside of these lands was prohibited, wealthy livestock farmers found that the land within their counties was too small for them, so they crossed the county borders to illegally occupy government land. By 1835, almost all members of the colonial assembly had become squatters, and from around 1840 the term "squatter" came to refer to the upper class of the colony.
