Ikkanbari - Ikkanbari

Japanese:
Ikkanbari - Ikkanbari

A paper-covered lacquerware favorite of tea masters, created by Hirai Ikkan. It is made by stretching Japanese paper over the original form, pasting more Japanese paper on top with lacquer paste, and then stacking the paper until it reaches the required thickness. The form is then removed and the surface is coated with lacquer. It is favored by tea masters for its elegant finish and is used for tea utensils, but in recent years, it has also come to be called this name for inexpensive paper-covered lacquerware made from newspaper and other materials. Hirai Ikkan (1578-1657), the inventor of Ikkan-bari, was a Ming dynasty naturalized during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644) and was born in the area around Hirai-feng in Lake Sai, so he took the surname Hirai. The tea master Sen no Sotan was a fan of his work and employed him as a lacquer artist. His descendants have carried on the business, and it has now been passed down for 14 generations as one of the Senke Ten Craftsmen.
