A mining city in northern Chile. It is located about 140 km inland from the Pacific coast, on the western slope of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 2,700 m. It has one of the world's largest copper deposits, and mining began by open-cut mining in 1915. It produces about three-quarters of the country's copper. The ore-dressing and smelting facilities were completed in 1952, and the smelting facilities were expanded in 1968, making it possible to produce 500,000 tons per year since the late 1970s. There are also deposits in the nearby towns of Sagasca and Ejotica. The copper produced is transported by rail to Antofagasta, located on the Pacific coast about 220 km southwest, for export. Development was initially led by an American company, but it was nationalized in 1969. Population: 29,959 (estimated 1983).
