This refers to a condition in which a skin rash appears all over the body as a result of a toxic substance entering the body from outside or being damaged by a toxic substance produced inside the body. Toxic rashes do not include those with a clear cause, such as drug rashes and skin lesions due to viral infections. Toxic rashes appear as various skin rashes such as papules, erythema, purpura, wheals, and small blisters, but each case shows a single symptom and does not coexist with various symptoms at the same time. Mucous membranes may also be affected, and superficial lymphadenopathy may be observed. Sometimes systemic symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pain, and convulsions are also present. It generally occurs acutely and is easily alleviated with appropriate treatment.

体外から毒性物質が体内に入るとか，あるいは体内でつくり出された毒性物質で生体が障害を受け，その結果，皮疹が全身に生じた状態をいう。薬疹，ウイルス感染による皮膚病変のように，原因が明らかなものは中毒疹に含めない。中毒疹では丘疹，紅斑，紫斑，膨疹，小水疱など各種の皮疹が現れるが，個々の症例では単一の症候を示し，同時に種々のものが混在することはない。粘膜も侵されることがあり，表在性リンパ節腫脹を認めることもある。ときに発熱，嘔吐，下痢，関節痛，けいれんなどの全身症状を伴う。一般に急性に起り，適切な治療により容易に軽快する。
