Ozawa Eitaro

[Died] April 23, 1988. Actor and director from Zushi, Kanagawa. After graduating from Shiba Middle School, he devoted himself to tuberculosis treatment. In 1929, he began his acting career as a trainee at Kawarasaki Chojuro's Shinza theater, and participated in proletarian theater activities at the Left Wing Theater and other venues, taking the name Ozawa Sakae (in 1957 he changed his name to his real name, Eitaro). In 1934, he participated in the formation of the Shinkyo Theater Company, and in 1940, he established a reputation for his work on Mafune Toyosaku's Fugue. In August of the same year, the company was disbanded due to repression. In 1944, he formed the Haiyuza Theater Company with Senda Koreya and others. While he continued to play a central role as a central actor, he also made his debut as a director in 1959 with Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and produced ambitious works such as the first of its kind in the new theater world, Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan (1968). In 1969, he came into conflict with Senda over his advocacy of popularizing new theater, and left Haiyuza. He later became active in commercial theater, musicals, and movies, and won the Kinokuniya Theater Award in 1984 for his play Fugue.

俳優，演出家。芝中学卒業後，結核療養に専念。 1929年河原崎長十郎の心座の研究生として俳優生活を始め，左翼劇場などでプロレタリア演劇活動に参加，小沢栄を名のる (1957年に本名の栄太郎に改名) 。 34年新協劇団の結成に参加，40年真船豊作『遁走譜』で評価を確立した。同年8月弾圧により同劇団は解散。 44年千田是也らと劇団俳優座を結成。以後その中心的俳優として活躍する一方，59年にシェークスピアの『十二夜』で演出家としてデビュー，新劇界初の『東海道四谷怪談』 (68) など意欲作を手がけた。 69年新劇の大衆化を唱えて千田と対立し，俳優座を退団。その後は商業演劇やミュージカル，映画でも活躍した。 84年の『遁走譜』で紀伊国屋演劇賞を受賞。
