Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla)

Japanese: フダンソウ(不断草) - フダンソウ(英語表記)Beta vulgaris var. cicla
Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla)
A biennial plant of the Chenopodiaceae family. It is also called 'Toujisha'. Native to southern Europe, it was introduced to Japan via China in ancient times, and is now a type of vegetable that is widely cultivated in fields. It is thought to have come from the same original species as sugar beet, but its roots do not grow thick. The above-ground part produces basal leaves with long stalks, and the leaf surface is long and oval, about 20 cm long, with thick leaves and wavy edges. In early summer, the flower stalk extends to about 1 m and produces small yellow-green flowers similar to spinach, layered in several tiers.
