Demon - Dämon (English spelling) German

It is mainly used to mean "evil spirits", but its origin comes from the Greek word daimōn, which originally meant the souls of the dead. For this reason, demons have both good and evil sides, and are not only seen as evil beings that bring misfortune to humans, but are also seen as beings that are very close to gods (demigods). The belief that the supernatural is something to be feared and dangerous has its origins in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, as can be seen in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian documents. They are said to attack humans and cause mental and physical illnesses, misfortune, and disasters. However, as was commonly believed in ancient China and Japan, demons are sometimes understood in a broader sense to include demons, demons, kappa, mountain hags, and other spirits of nature, rather than the souls of humans and animals that have left their bodies.

おもに「悪霊(あくりょう)」の意味に用いられるが、その語源はギリシア語のダイモーンdaimōnに由来し、本来は死者の魂の意であった。このため、善悪両方の側面をもち、人間に不幸をもたらす邪悪な存在としてばかりではなく、神に限りなく近い存在（半神）とみなされることもあった。超自然的なものを畏怖(いふ)すべきもの、危険なものとみる信仰は、古代エジプトやメソポタミアの文献にも現れているとおり、その起源は相当古いものである。それらは人間に襲いかかり、精神的かつ身体的な病気や不幸、災難を引き起こすとされている。ただし、古代の中国や日本で一般に信仰されていたように、デーモンを人間や動物の身体を離脱した魂というよりも、鬼、魑魅魍魎(ちみもうりょう)、河童(かっぱ)、山姥(やまんば)をはじめ、自然の精霊をも含めた広い意味でとらえる場合もある。
