A structure that transfers the various loads imposed on a building (its own weight, live load, earthquake load, wind load, etc.) to the ground is called a foundation, and the construction of foundation structures is collectively called foundation work. If the ground has sufficient bearing capacity, the foundation structure is built directly on the ground, but if the ground's bearing capacity is insufficient, ground improvement work is carried out or piles are driven in and the foundation structure is built on top of that.
