The name Mt. Aso is said to come from Asoomai, which means a fire-breathing mountain, and as the crater is called Miike (divine pond), the core of faith in Mt. Aso was located in the crater. Aso Shrine, which enshrines Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, the god of Miike, holds the Hiburi Ceremony in March, and the subordinate Shimo Shrine holds the Hitaki Ceremony for about 60 days from August 19th to October 16th, both of which are appropriate events for a mountain of fire.
