Gakuanji Temple

Japanese: 額安寺 - がくあんじ

A Shingon Ritsu temple in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture. It is also known as Nukata-dera. It is said to be the successor to Kumagori-ji Temple, which was founded by Prince Shotoku, but this is unclear. It is the family temple of the Nukata clan, who flourished in this area, and judging from excavated roofing tiles, it is believed to have been founded at the end of the Asuka period. In the 8th century, the temple was improved by the monk Doji, who had studied in China, and in the Kamakura period it was restored by Eison of Saidai-ji Temple, but the fortunes of the temple declined due to fires during the Muromachi period and the relocation of the large pagoda to Shitenno-ji Temple by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. 奈良県大和郡山市にある真言律宗の寺。一名額田（ぬかた）寺ともいう。聖徳太子創建の熊凝（くまごり）寺の後身というが明らかでない。この地に繁衍（はんえん）した額田氏の氏寺で，出土瓦よりみて創建は飛鳥時代末期と思われる。8世紀に入唐留学僧道慈により寺観の整備がすすみ，鎌倉時代には西大寺の叡尊により中興されたが，室町時代の兵火，豊臣秀吉による大塔の四天王寺移建などで寺運は衰退した。多くの寺宝がある。額田寺伽藍幷条里図【堀池春峰】
