1855‐1913
French meteorologist. Born in Paris. His father was a high-ranking official who served as ambassador and minister. In 1880 he joined France's central meteorological observatory, and in 1883 published his theory on the central activity of the atmosphere. In 1892 he became a nominal member of the observatory, and in 1896 he established an upper-altitude meteorological observatory on the outskirts of Paris at his own expense, where he conducted high-altitude observations. In April 1902, he published an article in the Académie des Sciences journal, Comte Landeu, stating that temperature decreases with altitude, but becomes nearly constant above an altitude of 8-12 km.

フランスの気象学者。パリ生れ。父は大使，大臣にもなった高官。1880年フランスの中央気象台に入り，83年には大気活動の中心論を発表した。92年からは名目だけの気象台員となり，96年には私費を投じてパリ郊外に高層気象観測所をつくり高層観測を行った。1902年4月，アカデミー･デ･シアンスの雑誌《コント･ランデュ》に，気温は高度とともに下がっていくが，8～12kmより高いところではほぼ一定になることを発表した。
