1855‐1913 French meteorologist. Born in Paris. His father was a high-ranking official who served as ambassador and minister. In 1880 he joined France's central meteorological observatory, and in 1883 published his theory on the central activity of the atmosphere. In 1892 he became a nominal member of the observatory, and in 1896 he established an upper-altitude meteorological observatory on the outskirts of Paris at his own expense, where he conducted high-altitude observations. In April 1902, he published an article in the Académie des Sciences journal, Comte Landeu, stating that temperature decreases with altitude, but becomes nearly constant above an altitude of 8-12 km.
