Located in Vienna, Austria, this is one of the world's largest art museums. Its history dates back to Maximilian I, based on the collections of successive Habsburgs. It was during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm that serious collecting began. Rudolf II purchased masterpieces by Pieter Bruegel and Albrecht Dürer, and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm continued his ambitious collecting activities. In 1659, he ordered the Flemish painter David Teniers the Younger to create the world's first illustrated catalogue of an art collection. In the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresa added Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and others to the collection, and in 1781, the year after Maria Theresa's death, the collection was opened to the public. The Renaissance-style building that stands today was built in 1891 and designed by Gottfried Sempell. As the name of the museum suggests, it has a collection of masterpieces from almost every genre, from ancient times to the present. In addition to the ancient Roman cameo "Gemma Augustae" and 15 pieces including "Hunters in the Snow," which account for almost one third of all works by Bruegel the Elder, nine pieces including "Adoration of the Holy Trinity" by Dürer, Jan Vermeer's "The Artist's Studio (Allegory of Painting)," Rubens' "Hélène Fourment in a Fur Coat," Rembrandt van Rijn's "Titus Reading," Diego Velázquez's "Portrait of Princess Margaret," and the masterpiece "The Salt Shaker of Francis I" by metalworker Benvenuto Cellini are also world-famous.
