A Jewish holiday. It is also called the Purification of the Temple. It lasts for one week from the 25th of the Jewish month of Chislev (November to December in the solar calendar). It commemorates the day on the 25th of the month of Chislev in 164 BCE when Judas Maccabeus purified the Jerusalem Temple, which had been desecrated by the Seleucid dynasty's Antiochus IV Epiphanes, and rededicated it as a Jewish sanctuary. It is also called the Festival of Lights, and the custom is to decorate an eight-branched candelabrum called the Hanukkiah and add one light each night during the festival.
