Holmes is an amateur detective who first appeared in the novel A Study in Scarlet (1887) by the British novelist A.C. Doyle. He lives in a lodging house on Baker Street in London with the narrator of the story, Dr. John H. Watson, and solves mysteries brought to him by ordinary people and difficult cases that the police cannot solve, with clear reasoning and quick action. This famous duo of detective Holmes and Dr. Watson also appears in the next novel, The Sign of Four (1890), but their reputation did not yet gain traction.
