A French nationalist political group formed in the wake of the Dreyfus Affair, and the name of its organ newspaper. It was formed in 1899 by anti-Dreyfus intellectuals such as Maurras, and soon adopted the banner of the restoration of the monarchy. It had an action group called the Camelots du roi, and attacked Jews, Protestants, Freemasons, and Socialists as "foreigners." As the most thoroughgoing anti-republican and anti-parliamentary movement under the Third Republic, it had a considerable influence on the right wing and Catholic world, and many writers, including Bourget, Bernanos, and Brajac, were associated with this group.
