Hans Baldung

German painter. Commonly known as Grien, he was born near Strasbourg. His early biographical facts are unclear, but it is believed that he worked in Dürer's workshop from 1507 to 1509, and his early style was heavily influenced by Dürer. From 1505 to 1508, he produced two altarpieces for the city church of Halle, depicting the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian and the Adoration of the Three Kings. From 1509 to 1512, he stayed in Freiburg, where he produced many stained glass sketches and a huge main altarpiece for the cathedral. He worked thereafter in Strasbourg, where he died. His figures have a Mannerist distortion of form due to the introduction of light. In addition to allegorical paintings such as Vanity (Kunstgeschichtisches Museum, Vienna) and Death and Woman (Kunstmuseum, Basel), he also produced copperplate and woodblock prints.

ドイツの画家。通称をグリーンGrienといい、ストラスブール近郊に生まれる。初期の伝記的事実は明らかでないが、1507～09年の間デューラーの工房で働いたことがあると推定され、初期の作風にはデューラーの影響が濃い。1505～08年ハレの市教会のために「聖セバスチャンの殉教」および「三王の礼拝」を描いた二つの扉式祭壇画を制作している。09～12年フライブルクに滞在し、同地の聖堂に多くのステンド・グラスの下絵を描いたほか、聖堂の巨大な主祭壇画を描いた。以後はストラスブールで制作し、同地で死去した。彼の人物画には光の導入によってフォルムにマニエリスム的なひずみが生じている。『虚栄』（ウィーン美術史博物館）や『死と女』（バーゼル美術館）のような寓意(ぐうい)画のほか、銅版および木版の作もある。
