Chinese Studies - Sinologie

Japanese: 中国学 - ちゅうごくがく（英語表記）Sinologie

A general term for the study of Chinese cultural artifacts in general. It began in the 13th century, when the emergence of the Mongol Empire drew European interest to China. After that, Christian missionaries and gradually ordinary scholars also became involved, and in the second half of the 19th century, the United States also joined, and research is being conducted in a wide range of fields. What is new is that it is conducted in a completely free position from the old traditions of Chinese studies in China and Japan.

中国の文物一般を研究する学問の総称。 13世紀，モンゴル帝国の出現によって，ヨーロッパ人の関心が中国に向いた時点に始る。以後キリスト教宣教師をはじめとし，次第に一般の学者たちも参加し，19世紀後半にはアメリカも加わり幅広い分野にわたる研究がなされている。中国や日本の中国研究の古い伝統からまったく自由な立場で行われる点に新しさがある。
