Japanese: 恵那山トンネル - えなさんトンネル

This road tunnel connects Iida City, Nagano Prefecture and Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture on the Chuo Expressway, and passes through Mount Ena at the southern end of the Central Alps. Construction of the first stage of the Ena Mountain Tunnel, begun by the Japan Highway Public Corporation in March 1967 and completed in August 1975, is Japan's first truly long road tunnel, with a total length of 8,489m and a width of 7m. There are many long railway tunnels, such as the Seikan Tunnel (53.9km), the Oshimizu Tunnel (22.2km), and the Simplon Tunnel (19.8km), but road tunnels have been slow to become longer, as shown by the Kanmon National Highway Tunnel (3.46km), which was the longest in the world until it was surpassed by the Mont Blanc Tunnel (11.6km).

中央自動車道の長野県飯田市と岐阜県中津川市を結び，中央アルプス南端部の恵那山を貫く道路トンネル。日本道路公団により1967年3月着工，75年8月に完成した第1期恵那山トンネルは全長8489m，幅員7mの日本初の本格的な長大道路トンネルである。青函トンネル(53.9km)，大清水トンネル(22.2km)，シンプロン･トンネル(19.8km)など鉄道トンネルには長大なものが多いが，道路トンネルのほうは，関門国道トンネル(3.46km)がモン･ブラン･トンネル(11.6km)に抜かれるまで世界第1位であったように長大化が遅れていた。
