An elastic wave that travels along the surface of a semi-infinite elastic body separated by a plane. It was theoretically derived by Rayleigh in 1885 and has a relatively long period. Seismic waves that travel along the Earth's surface are also a type of Rayleigh wave, and since their speed is about 90% that of S waves, they are observed later than S waves at points more than 1,000 km away from the epicenter. →Related topic: Surface waves Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
