A group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean about 800 km east of New Zealand's South Island. Territory of New Zealand. The main islands are Chatham Island (one third of which is occupied by a lagoon) and Pitt Island. Sheep grazing is the main industry. The Polynesian Moriori people lived there, but they were wiped out by the Maori who invaded in the 19th century, and now the Maori and other people live there. 963 km2 . 787 people (1995).
