… Four species of fish have been collected from the deepest part of the trench (hyperhassal zone) of 6000m or more. All of them belong to the families Langfish and Scallopidae and are considered to be deep-sea benthic. The deepest fishes collected so far include Careproctus amblystomopsis , a species of Langfish collected by the Soviet research vessel Beechad II at a depth of 7579m in the Japan Trench, and Abyssobrotula galatheae , a species of Scallopidae collected by the American research vessel Pillsbury at a depth of 8370m in the Puerto Rico Trench. There are many closely related species of Langfish and Scallopidae that live from the coastal areas on the continental shelf to the bottom of the deep sea zone of the trench, and there are no fundamental differences in the body structure and shape of the fishes, despite the large differences in environmental factors such as pressure, light intensity, and water temperature. …
