In the Edo period, the shogunate ordered various feudal domains, towns, and villages to stockpile unhulled rice in preparation for emergencies. The purpose was to store rice in case of a storm, but from the mid-19th century onwards it was also used to regulate rice prices. 囲米 (かこいまい) ともいう。江戸時代,幕府が非常時にそなえて,諸藩,町村などに命じて備蓄した籾米。備荒貯蓄が目的であったが,中期以降は米価調節にも利用された。
