Tsukiji

[1] [noun] land built up by filling in sea or swamps; reclaimed land. [2] A place name in the southern part of Chuo Ward, Tokyo. It is on the right bank of the mouth of the Sumida River, and broadly refers to the reclaimed land from Minatomachi and Akashicho (formerly Teppozu) to Hama-rikyu Gardens. After the great fire of 1657, the area was reclaimed, and Hongan-ji Temple Betsuin (Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple) and other buildings were moved there, forming part of the city. From 1868 to 1899, a foreign settlement was established in Teppozu Akashicho, and it was lined with Western-style buildings and many theaters, and bustling as a foreign town at the forefront of the enlightenment movement.

つき‐じ ‥ヂ【築地】

[1] 〘名〙海や沼などを埋めて築きあげた土地。埋立地。[2] 東京都中央区南部の地名。隅田川河口の右岸にあり、広くは湊町・明石町（旧鉄砲洲）から浜離宮庭園までの埋立地を含めていう。明暦三年（一六五七）の大火以後に埋め立てられ、本願寺別院（築地本願寺）などが移されて市街地となる。明治元年（一八六八）から同三二年まで、鉄砲洲明石町に外国人居留地が置かれ、洋風建築が並び、劇場も多く、文明開化の先端をいく異人町としてにぎわった。
