To sacrifice oneself as a slave to the Three Treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha in order to make an offering to them. It is well known that Emperor Wu of the Southern Liang Dynasty sacrificed himself at Tongtai Temple several times. Each time, the crown prince and officials would offer huge sums of money to accept the emperor, and a new enthronement ceremony would be held. The sacrifice of Emperor Wu of Liang is said to be based on the Ayoka Sutra, translated by Sanghapala. The emperors of the Chin dynasty followed suit, and the mother of Pei Zhi of the Northern Wei dynasty also became a slave to the Three Treasures.
