Kappa Marries Into a Baby - Kappa Mukōiri

Japanese:
Kappa Marries Into a Baby - Kappa Mukōiri

...Comparing this "Monkey Bride" with the "Snake Bride/Water-begging Type," we can point out the difference that in the former, the monkey bride is made to help with farm work, while in the latter, the monkey bride is often made to water the rice paddies. This can be understood as indicating that "Monkey Bride" was told in farming areas where the monkey represents the mountain god, while "Snake Bride" was told in rice paddy areas where the snake represents the water god. Other folk tales that belong to this "water-begging type" include "Kappa Bride" and "Demon Bride." These "water-begging type" folk tales are told independently, or in the latter half, they are accompanied by "Ubakawa" type folk tales in which a girl who escapes from a foreign husband becomes the wife of a rich man's son, or "Kozuna" type folk tales in which the girl's father or his helper goes to rescue her.

Japanese:
