Medway is the administrative capital of the southeast of England, United Kingdom. It is a river port city located about 45km southeast of London, facing the lower reaches of the Medway River, which flows into the estuary of the Thames. The town developed around the Royal Navy Dockyard, founded by Henry VIII, which closed in 1984 and is preserved as a historical building. The literary giant Charles J.H. Dickens lived in Chatham from 1817 to 1821 because his father was a clerk in the Navy Accountant's Office, and wrote his autobiographical masterpiece, David Copperfield (1849-50), which is set in the town. Population: 73,468 (2001). Chatham |
