The Athabascans are the largest Native American tribe in the Athabascan language group, living in a vast area along the Churchill River in northern Canada. Their population is estimated at about 5,000. They lived a nomadic life, following the seasonal migration of caribou, which was their most important food and living resource. In a society based on the survival of the fittest, strong men robbed the weak of their possessions and women, and women had a very low status and were forced to carry luggage, while the weak and elderly, who needed the care of others, were left to die. When the Hudson's Bay Company's fur trade became popular in 1717, they turned to fur hunting and also worked as fur brokers. A smallpox epidemic in 1781, followed by disease and malnutrition, combined with the decline of the fur trade, led to a decline in their population.
