...It is part of the lineage of medieval European ballads. Modern literature began in the early 19th century with national romanticism, which produced a series of lyric poets such as Bjarni Thorarensen (1786-1841) and Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807-45), and novelists such as Jón Thoroddsen (1819-68). In the 20th century, novelists who gained international fame included Gunnarsson, Thórbergur Thórðarson (1889-1974), who wrote in Danish, and Nobel Prize winner Laxness.
