Born: July 6, 1951, Toowoomba. Australian film and stage actor. Full name: Geoffrey Roy Rush. Making the most of his tough looks, he is known for his quirky acting, playing villains and unconventional characters. In 1968, he joined the University of Queensland Theatre Company. In 1971, he was discovered by the Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) and made his stage debut. He made his film debut in 1981, but for the next 10 years he was mainly active on stage. He gained international fame when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as a gifted pianist with extraordinary abilities in Shine (1996). His other works include Les Misérables (1998), Elizabeth (1998), Shakespeare in Love (1998), and The King's Speech (2010). He gained attention for his passionate performance as the pirate captain Hector Barbossa in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean series. In 2009, he made his Broadway debut in Exit the King, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor. In 2012, he was named Australian of the Year.

[Died] April 19, 1813, Philadelphia American physician and politician. He proposed that all illnesses have the same root, and that all treatments should be the same, and was known as the "Hippocrates of Pennsylvania." He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in 1760. He went to England and graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1768. He returned to the UK in 1769 and became a professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1791. He opened the Philadelphia Asylum. He published America's first psychiatric textbook, Diseases of the mind (1812). He was also active as a politician, and was one of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence. He fought for the emancipation of slaves, against the death penalty, and for women's and education issues.

Died January 7, 1833. Philadelphia. American sculptor. Considered America's first great sculptor. He initially trained in decorative sculpture for ships, served in the military during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), and became active as a sculptor after the war. In 1805, he was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, produced many wood sculptures and bronze statues, and was also active in the Philadelphia City Council. His main work is the Statue of George Washington (Independence Hall, Philadelphia).

アメリカの医師，政治家。万病帰するところ一病であり，すべての治療法もまた同様であるという説を立て，「ペンシルバニアのヒポクラテス」といわれた。 1760年ニュージャージー大学 (のちのプリンストン大学) を卒業。イギリスに渡り 68年エディンバラ大学を卒業，69年帰国してフィラデルフィア大学化学教授，91年ペンシルバニア大学医学部教授。フィラデルフィア施療院を開設。アメリカ最初の精神医学の教科書『精神の病気』 Diseases of the mind (1812) を公刊。政治家としても活躍し，アメリカ独立宣言署名者の一人。奴隷解放，死刑反対，婦人・教育問題のため戦った。

アメリカ合衆国の彫刻家。アメリカ最初の優れた彫刻家といわれる。初め船舶の装飾彫刻の修業をし，独立戦争の間 (1775～83) 軍隊に勤務，戦後彫刻家として活躍。 1805年ペンシルバニア美術アカデミーの設立者の一人となり，多くの木彫やブロンズ像を制作，フィラデルフィア市議会でも活躍した。主要作品『ジョージ・ワシントン像』 (フィラデルフィア，独立記念館) 。
