Corpus callosum

A bundle of fibers located on the inner surface of the left and right cerebral hemispheres that connects them morphologically and functionally. From the front, it consists of the knee, trunk, and ampulla, and has an overall U-shape. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a congenital absence of the corpus callosum, and is often accompanied by other malformations such as microcephaly and porosity, causing intellectual developmental disorders and seizures. If the corpus callosum is affected later in life by a brain tumor or other cause, and the connection between the left and right cerebral hemispheres is cut off, symptoms such as apraxia, motor paralysis, difficulty concentrating, reduced response to stimuli, personality changes, and in the final stages may lead to dementia and impaired consciousness. This is called corpus callosum syndrome.

左右大脳半球の内側面にあり，両者を形態的および機能的に連結する線維の束をいう。前方より膝部，幹部，膨大部より成り，全体として「つ」の字形をしている。脳梁欠損症は先天的に脳梁が形成されないもので，小頭症や脳孔症など，他の奇形を伴うことが多く，知能発育障害やけいれん発作を起す。脳腫瘍などで後天的に脳梁が侵され，左右の大脳半球の連絡が断たれると，失行症，運動麻痺，精神の集中困難，刺激に対する反応の減退，性格変化などが現れ，末期的には痴呆，意識障害に陥ることもある。これを脳梁症候群という。
