A former town in Awa District, southern Chiba Prefecture. Facing the Uraga Channel, most of the area is hilly. The Uchibo Line runs through the town. It is famous as a major loquat producing area, on a par with Mogi in Nagasaki, and fruit and flower cultivation is thriving. The coast is part of Minamiboso Quasi-National Park. In March 2006, it merged with Toyama Town, Shirahama Town, Chikura Town, Maruyama Town, Wada Town, and Miyoshi Village in Awa District to become Minamiboso City. 25.69 km2 . 5,775 people (2003). 千葉県南部,安房(あわ)郡の旧町。浦賀水道に面し,大部分が丘陵地。内房線が通じる。長崎市茂木と並ぶビワの大産地として有名で,果樹,花卉(かき)の栽培が盛ん。海岸は南房総国定公園の一部。2006年3月,安房郡富山町,白浜町,千倉町,丸山町,和田町,三芳村と合併し市制,南房総市となる。25.69km2。5775人(2003)。
