Mr. Yukawa

Japanese: 湯川氏 - ゆかわうじ

A medieval samurai family in Kii. A branch of the Kai Takeda clan of the Seiwa Genji clan. It is said that the family began in 1241 (Ninji 2) when Takeda Nobutada was disowned by his father Nobumitsu and went down to Kumano in Kii Province. They had influence over Arita, Hidaka, and Muro counties, and during the Northern and Southern Courts period, they made Tomiyasu Manor in Hidaka County their base. During the Eikyo and Bun'an eras (1429-49), they served as the fourth party of the Muromachi shogunate's hokoshu. During the Sengoku period, they rallied local lords to eliminate the shugo forces and advance their control over southern Kii in opposition to Hatakeyama Naoyuki's control of the territory. They also allied with the Saika forces in the lower Kinokawa River basin, where there were many Honganji followers, and in the Ishiyama Honganji Rebellion, in which Oda Nobunaga and Honganji fought, they initially participated in Nobunaga's side, but later switched to an anti-Nobunaga side.

紀伊の中世武家。清和源氏甲斐武田氏の族。1241年(仁治2)武田信忠が父信光に義絶され紀伊国熊野へ下ったのがはじまりという。在田，日高，牟婁郡にわたって勢力を持ち，南北朝のころには日高郡富安荘を本拠とした。永享～文安年間(1429‐49)には室町幕府奉公衆として四番方を務めた。戦国時代には畠山尚順の領国支配に対し，国人を集結して守護勢力を排除し南紀支配をすすめた。本願寺門徒の多い紀ノ川下流域の雑賀勢とも結び，織田信長と本願寺が争った石山本願寺一揆では，初期には信長方へ参加したが，のち反信長勢力に転じた。
